How to Post a GIF on Instagram (Feed, Reels, Stories and DMs)
Updated , 4 min read
Instagram doesn't take GIF files directly. Here's the simple way to post your GIF as a looping video on your feed, Reels and Stories, plus how GIF stickers and DMs work.
The short answer
Instagram doesn't let you upload a .gif file from your phone or computer as a post. The fix is to turn the GIF into a short MP4 video first. Instagram treats it as a video and loops it, so it looks and feels like a GIF.
Our free GIF to MP4 converter does this in seconds, with no watermark and no sign-up.
Post a GIF to your feed or Reels
Videos you post to your feed are shared as Reels, so this works for both.
- Open the free GIF to MP4 converter and drop in your GIF.
- Repeat the loop 3× or 5× so the video lasts a few seconds. Very short clips look abrupt.
- Download the MP4 and send it to your phone (AirDrop, email, or cloud storage).
- In Instagram, tap + → Reel (or Post), pick the MP4, add your caption and share.
Post a GIF to your Story
Same steps: convert the GIF to MP4, then add it to your Story like any video.
The GIF stickers in Stories are a different thing: they come from Instagram's built-in sticker library, which you search with the GIF button. You can't add your own GIF file there; upload it as a video instead.
Send a GIF in Instagram DMs
In a chat, the GIF button searches Instagram's built-in GIF library. To send your own GIF, convert it to MP4 and send it as a video from your camera roll.
Get the best quality
- Use a 4:5 (portrait) or 9:16 (Story/Reel) shape so the GIF fills the screen. The free crop GIF tool does this in one click.
- Keep text away from the edges; Instagram places buttons and captions there.
- Start from a sharp GIF. Upscaling a tiny GIF makes it blurry, so make a new one at full size if needed.
